This is not really true. Sahmain and other Celtic traditions lived through word of mouth and, actually practicing traditions. It was celebrated as a time "when the veil thins", and is related as well to Day of the dead in Mexico, a time to remember and honor ancestors who passed on. I believe it is actually Christian sects who demonized Halloween- a tradition/ holiday which threatened their "good old control" within the church.

It actually goes back to Christians being taunted by a nasty dude named Jack, who used to harm Christians on their All Hallows Eve holiday. So Christans began making Jack O' Lanterns to scare him off because he and his gangs would scare them at night. The idea was to make him think demons were after him and such-scare him back. Hence the "trick" in trick or treat. The treats are the commercialized part. Amoungst extra decorations.
