Holy smokesâŠthe cluelessness and/or shameless dishonesty of this guyâŠ! đł Is anyone actually falling for it? The way he faceplants from the very outset is so obvious that it shouldnât be possible for anyone to miss. This sort of intellectual garbage makes me nauseous. Yes - old science books have become obsolete because they have bern proven wrong - *by better science*! Science progresses, because it has an inherent error-correcting mechanism. That is why science works in the first place, for ****s sake. The Bible is the same because itâs dogmatism. The Bible doesnât âstill stand strongâ. It stays unchanged because THEISTS REFUSE TO USE THEIR BRAINS TO HONESTLY QUESTION IT, because theism is a dishonest and intellectually bankrupt exercise in anti-thinking.

Frank, though I love what you said here it seems like it misses the point made by the questioner (and therefore Gervais). His point is that science will be discovered again and that we would eventually get to our current level of knowledge again even if all current scientific knowledge was destroyed. He also says that the Bible, if destroyed, would not come about again over time. The assertion being that Truth will lead us to science and not to the Bible. My personal response⊠1. Different kinds of information doesnât negate the fact that it is information or necessarily call into question its veracity. 2. If the Bible is destroyed and culture lacks an understanding of God, science has no reason to flourish.

That is ridiculous. If we deleted World War Two from history and from everyones memory, then we wouldnât know that it happened either. But that doesnât mean it never happened. By his logic World War Two never happened because we wouldnât know it happened if our memories were deleted, and because figuring out scientific facts like how food tastes good would be Quickly relearned if we had our mind erased about it tasting good. So food tasting good is real, but Bible is fake is his conclusion. He probably thinks the only reason that humans believe in god is because of the Bible, but it is not the only reason.

Youâre in a conversation and someone says, âThe Bible just isnât relevant anymore. Our world has moved beyond it.â What would you say? The Bibleâs influence on the world as we know it has been so profound and so thorough thatâs itâs easy to forget just how much it has shaped our understanding of science, morality, politics, literature, music, language, and so many other aspects of life and culture. In many places around the world, the Bible is more influential now than ever. In other words, when someone says that the Bible just isnât relevant anymore, theyâre just wrong. Here are 3 reasons why: Number 1: The Bible shaped and continues to shape the Western mind. Though Westerners often take things like political freedom, human rights, orphanages, hospitals, womenâs rights, care for the poor and opposition to things like slavery and pederasty for grantedâŠwe shouldnât! As atheist historian Tom Holland points out in his book âDominionâ. Every one of these things was birthed from Christianityâs influence on the world. Quote, âThe idea that every human being possessed an equal dignity was not remotely a self-evident truth. A Roman would have laughed at it. The origins of this principle lay not in the French Revolution, nor in the Declaration of Independence, nor in the Enlightenment, but in the Bible.â And thatâs not all! Echoes of the Bible and its ideas about morality and human dignity can be seen in the works of Augustine, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Dickens, Dostoevsky, Melville, Mark Twain, and others including modern writers like Margaret Atwood and JK Rowling. The very languages we speak were shaped by the Bible as translators were forced to stretch English, German, and other European tongues to fully express the meaning communicated in the Bibleâs original Greek and Hebrew languages. Philosopher Vishal Mangalwadi writes, âThe Bible made the modern West a reading and thinking civilization.â Number 2: Modern science is a product of biblical assumptions. Most of the founders of modern science were Christians. Men like Blaise Pascal, Johannes Kepler, Isaac Newton, Robert Boyle, and Gregor Mendel believed their discoveries about nature bore witness to the glory of God. And as philosopher of science Stephen Meyer argues, they believed certain things about the universe that made science possible in the first place. The scientific method itself relies on certain assumptions about the world that came from the Bible. This is why empirical science only emerged out of and flourished in the Christian West. The Bible describes a world that was made by God to be intelligible and orderly. As Meyer says, âBecause we have an intelligence that has, as its source, the intelligence that built the world, we can understand the world.â This is why we expect consistency and order in nature and why we expect as humans to be able to study and comprehend that consistency and order. Together, these assumptions form the basis of modern science. Far from replacing the Bible, science as we know it owes its very existence to the Bible. Number 3: The Bible is the most influential book on the planet, and will be more influential in the future. Today there are nearly 2.4 billion Christians on earth, more than any other religion. According to LifeWay Research, the number of evangelicals alone has tripled since 1970, and 77% of them live in the global south. By 2050, the number of Christians globally is expected to top 3 billion, and a third of them will live in Africa. In less than 10 years, there will be more Christians in China than in the United States. And of course all these Christians will want bibles. So by 2025, LifeWay predicts that 110 million bibles will be printed every year. Thatâs 15 million more than are currently printed each year. The Bible has been translated into over 700 languages, and sometime after 2038, Wycliffe Bible translators expects a Bible to be available in every written language on earth. In other words, the Bible has never been more influential on the worldâs population than it is right now. Though it may have fallen out of favor in the West, we tend to forget that Western assumptions about life and the world about justice and human rights were built on biblical ideas. If current trends hold, itâs not the Bible, but dismissive ideas about the Bible that will become increasingly irrelevant. So, the next time someone says that the Bible is no longer relevant, here are three things to remember⊠Number 1: The Bible shaped and continues to shape the Western mind. Number 2: Modern science is a product of biblical assumptions. Number 3: The Bible is the most influential book on the planet, and will be more influential in the future.

Ricky is correct in asserting that if the bible was lost to history then modern scientific discoveries could not resurrect it because it is the result of witness testimony, same could be said of any book that discusses anything except irrefutable science which could be rediscovered but as Frank points out even modern science becomes outdated because while certain truths about nature can be discovered in any era following the scientific method those theories are not so much incorrect as incomplete. Newtonian physics was modified/replaced by Einstein's theories of relativity so Ricky's comment seems to assume that we know everything that can be known scientifically today but newer discoveries either modify or replace older theories. The speed of light and number of planets in the solar system are likely to remain the same for thousands of years I would assume so if that information was lost it could in theory be rediscovered that yes the speed of light is what is and there are 8 planets and pluto the moon (yes that was once seen as a planet) but I think my point is clear. Some discoverable, foundational scientific facts are likely to remain the same but some will definitely change. The bible has stood the test of time though while scientific discoveries either modify or replace earlier theories... did I overcomplicate that?

That is missinterpetion of Ricky Gervais's argument. Bible is still here just because people put relevancy on it and continue sharing it. If there was a discontinuation, all copies were destroyed and there will not be anyone sharing it orally, it would be completely lost in 100 years. There is no way ro recreate it without copying it. Science on the other hand can be rediscovered even with a long discontinuation. You dont have to read about physical laws in a book, you can measure result of them again and than again come up with the same explanations.. Some theories were wrong, but those theories were just aproximately explanations of things we measured. Theories can be wrong, but actual things they try to describe are there and can be rediscovered again and again.

You are wrong on your title. There is a real God behind every Christian, and the Bible will be the cornerstone of morality for eternity. The last people that tried to depose God suffered extinction from a worldwide flood. Today the wars are going to accelerate until we are almost all dead, a variation of the days of Noah when only a few survived. This Bible is backed by eternal beings that no person has the power nor intelligence to depose.

Excellent answer. One thing that causes me to have strength, is the proof of God, no one seems to talk about. God out thought, and out smarted every PhD and every skeptic centuries ago. No theory against the Bible has ever stood the test of time, yet the answers to all ungodly theories ever thought of, past present and future, are all there. Only God could have an eternity of for site. I have trouble with tomorrow. A more practical point on God is that about 6 months ago I hairline fractured my left leg. I went three months on a walker, then was prayed for, and 10 days later was walking with no walker, crutches or cane with no pain at all. At 75, I should have gradually degenerated and died or at least not healed for a year or more. Instead, I can use this leg like it never happened. This has been true from only three months after the break. At my age, this is naturally impossible. God is real and if many of you ever see this, the benefits of Christianity are enormous. This healing is just one example. If you want to see, experience and understand why we are so loyal to Jesus, start here and begin to see what we see. Here is how. . Here is where to start. Pray This! Jesus I believe in you, forgive me all my sins, come into my life, and help me to live it better, in Jesus' name, Amen. Now find a good church and start reading your Bible, as part of starting your new life as a Christian. God Bless You.
