I like to think that true humility is fully understanding, accepting, and appreciating how totally responsible I am for everything in my life. And by that I mean, I’m totally responsible for messing it up and Jesus is totally responsible for fixing it.

I am an atheist. I define atheism as suspending any acknowledgment as to the reality of any particular god until sufficient credible evidence is introduced. My position is that *_I have no good reason to acknowledge the reality of any god._* And here is why I currently hold to such a position. Below are 10 facts I must consider when evaluating the claim made by certain theists that some god exists in reality. To be clear, these are not premises for any argument concluding there to be no gods. These are simply facts I must take into account when evaluating such a claim. 1. I personally have never observed a god. 2. I have never encountered any person whom has claimed to have observed a god. 3. I know of no accounts of persons claiming to have observed a god that were willing or able to demonstrate or verify their observation for authenticity, accuracy, or validity. 4. I have never been presented a valid logical argument which also employed sound premises that lead deductively to a conclusion that a god(s) exists in reality. 5. Of the many logical syllogisms I have encountered arguing for the reality of a god(s), I have found all to contain either logical fallacies or false or unsubstantiated premises. 6. I have never observed a phenomenon in which the existence of a god was a necessary antecedent for the known or probable explanation for the causation of that phenomenon. 7. Several proposed (and generally accepted) explanations for observable phenomena that were previously based on the agency of a god(s), have subsequently been replaced with rational, natural explanations, each substantiated with evidence that excluded the agency of a god(s). I have never encountered _vice versa._ 8. I have never experienced the presence of a god through intercession of angels, divine revelation, the miraculous act of divinity, or any occurrence of a supernatural event. 9. Every phenomena that I have ever observed has *_emerged_* from necessary and sufficient antecedents over time without exception. In other words, I have never observed a phenomenon (entity, process, object, event, process, substance, system, or being) that was created _ex nihilo_ - that is instantaneously came into existence by the solitary volition of a deity. 10. All claims of a supernatural or divine nature that I have encountered have either been refuted to my satisfaction, or do not present as falsifiable. ALL of these facts lead me to the only rational conclusion that concurs with the realities I have been presented - and that is the fact that there is *_no good reason_* for me to acknowledge the reality of any god. I have heard often that atheism is the denial of the Abrahamic god. But denial is the active rejection of a substantiated fact once credible evidence has been presented. Atheism is simply withholding such acknowledgement until sufficient credible evidence is introduced. *_It is natural, rational, and prudent to be skeptical of unsubstantiated claims, especially extraordinary ones._* I welcome any cordial response. Peace.

This is a good start, but there's more to it than this. To fully address the topic of humility, you need to tackle three separate things: Motivation (why bother being humble?), justification (why is it *correct* to be humble?), and means (okay, so HOW do I be humble?). You addressed motivation and some of means, but there's more to be said. -- Motivation (why bother being humble?): I don't think much more needs to be said about this one. The Bible constantly talks against pride, and in favor of humility, and it is very clear about this. So, I don't really think any more needs to be mentioned. But as you've probably noticed, there's more to it than this. -- Justification (why is it *correct* to be humble?): This part is more important than you might think, but before I get into it, you have to promise me that you will not continue reading through this section unless you're willing to read through the whole thing. I will be dismantling an inferior idea and putting a better one in its place, but if you don't stay for the replacement idea, you will be worse off than if you had never read it. Without further ado, let's start: The word "pride" is used in two different ways. One refers to boastfulness, arrogance, fullness of self. Everyone who believes that pride is bad will agree that this kind is bad. Meanwhile, the other definition of pride involves taking pride in your accomplishments, in your success. Lots of people do not have a problem with this kind of pride. And, I understand where they're coming from. Just because we use the word "pride" to refer to both does not necessarily mean that both of them are what the Bible is referring to. This is true -- sometimes words adopt different definitions as languages evolve, and I completely agree that this is the case with certain words. However, with this specific word and these specific definitions, I do believe that both are problematic. And again, I need you to stick with me through this. You might ask, what's the problem with taking pride in your accomplishments? Isn't it better to achieve than to not achieve? If you chose not to work hard, you would've failed, but you put in the effort and the work, and you succeeded. Don't you have every right to take pride in your deliberate actions? It is good to accomplish, and it's good to succeed. It's better to achieve than to not achieve -- it's true. And it's certainly good to work hard. I'll even grant you this: it's okay to take pride in accomplishments you're fully responsible for. But now, let's have a discussion about what you're fully responsible for. Your success could be a consequence of many things. Intellect, knowledge, fitness, work ethic, emotional stability, health, physical safety, nutrition, etc. in addition to the obvious of God's provision. Now, tell me, how many of these are you fully responsible for? Your genetics? Your upbringing? The values instilled into you? The food and water you had access to? The time and effort others poured into you? No. None of these can you claim 100% responsibility for. Don't forget how helpless an infant is. Without other people, you would not be alive. Now, if you're like me, you start to bristle by the end of this. You say, "Okay, fair enough, jerk, but then what's the point of anything? So what, I can't take pride in anything I do? Every action I take, I have to attribute my success to other people? Then what's the point of working hard? If I get no credit when I succeed, why bother?" What you truly need is a PURPOSE. You need a reason to work toward success. And what you need to remember is that you are the product of people (often many people) who have cared for you, helped you, advised you, fed you, taught you, etc. The greatest gift you can give them is to make the most of what they've done for you, to justify their toil and their suffering by becoming awesome in their honor. Choosing to voluntarily take on the responsibility of blessing those who have blessed you, by becoming who God made you to be, is the most rewarding path you can take. In the face of this, the idea of working primarily to glorify yourself seems not only petty, but also just objectively the incorrect answer. The reason you should be humble and not act with pride is because humility is the CORRECT answer. Many people contribute toward your success, and honoring them is the best way to pay back that blessing. Make no mistake, it *does* matter whether you make an effort or not, it does matter whether you strive toward success. But do it for their sake, do it to honor them and to make their efforts worth it. -- Means (ok, so HOW do I be humble?): I used to think humility was one of three things: being low on the totem pole, acting like I'm low on the totem pole, or convincing myself that I'm low on the totem pole. But it's none of these. These may be symptoms of humility but they aren't the source. The source of humility is the rejection of the entire notion of the totem pole. It is the complete acceptance of the fact that no human being is inferior to you, and no human being (besides Jesus) is superior to you. Now, you should show respect to people who have a higher position than yourself, but at a human level, you are equals. You should show that same amount of respect to people who have a lower position than yourself, because they are also your equal. Ideas can be inferior or superior, actions can be inferior or superior, etc, but human beings are created equal, and all of us are created in the image of God. If you truly believe this and you truly accept this as a fact, the actions of a humble person will flow naturally from you.

Nothing humble about pretending to know things you actually don't. Like a God exists... and the bible is actually from it..... and that you have a personal relationship with it... even tho you can't even show it to exist. Just the arrogance of ignorance, hidden in fake divinity.

Please, please never lean on I THINK, nor I BELIEVE but rather be confident in the Loving Testimony of our Lord Jesus Christ. Trust His word, and not a statement that begins with I Believe or Think
