I figure the best appraoches (other than what Dr. Turek gives) are to tie it to something that impacts them directly. Maybe get them open up and share a story about someone they know and/or loved who possibly got really sick, suffered a misfortune, or even died. Then you can ask what they think happens to someone like that... just gently push on the door and see if they'll talk. . A lot of people today are concerned with "justice", so if you can show them how God is a being of ultimate justice, perhaps they'd be more interested in finding out about him rather than just presenting him as someone who die for sinners. While that is his most critical aspect to believers, it might open the door a little if you can show how God brings justice to the oppressed and can redeem a person's life even beyond the grave.
